Bitten by the CSS Bug

So I couldn't sleep last night. What did I do? I went to Free CSS Templates and downloaded a CC 2.5 CSS skin. And I made a new Drupal 6 theme. This is easy enough that it could turn into a habit...

How long did it take you to do it? and how much would have it taken in drupal 5? And what keeps you awake now days?! ;)

It took me around two hours to put it together, but there are a lot of loose ends and unfinished bits that would need to be cleaned up for production use. If I'd been willing to use some actual tpl.php files (to move breadcrumbs around, or things like that) it would've been a bit easier as well. I'm just trying to stick to the 'CSS Only' exercise to see what things could be made easier for designers.

The same kind of system can be made to work in D5 by writing a theme (or a theme engine) that provides a consistent base XHTML framework ad eliminates Drupal's ugly core menu-related styles. It's just not quite as clean and smooth as 6, and there's not an easy way to 'transition' that kind of D5 theme into something more robuse (with tpl files and so on) as needs become more advanced.

In Drupal 6, all I needed to do was create an .info file and alter the CSS to point to the classes and markup in the standard drupal XHTML.

Not too worried

...I'm not too worried about it, honestly. My version has rough edges from the lack of tpl.php overrides, and his version has some layout differences that were needed by his client.

My purpose at the moment isn't so much to produce themes everyone will want, but to experiment and flush out any problems in the theming system and our standard XHTML. :)

drupal CMS

hmm... looking for a good CMS to use now for a site I'm developing (it's my first real site I'm developing for a client) and maybe I should really consider Drupal. It appears to be a lot more flexible than the other things out there... although, I am thinking of using Wordpress. This post has really put some thoughts in my head...
